چکیده

Cancer Control 601 The emergence of sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy as an alternative method to axillary dissection for staging the axilla in breast cancer patients has brought the value of axillary dissection into close scrutiny. In addition, it has stimulated the assessment of the biologic implications of micrometastatic disease to lymph nodes. Historical review of SLN technology demonstrates that micrometastatic disease in SLNs may be critical in the evaluation of false-negative SLNs. Furthermore, the presence of micrometastatic disease in the lymph nodes may carry prognostic significance for the overall behavior of the malignancy.

Axillary lymph node dissection in patients with breast cancer and sentinel lymph node micrometastasis or isolated tumor cells: is it necessary?

AIMS AND BACKGROUND Sentinel lymph node biopsy is the standard method for axillary lymph node staging in patients with early stage breast cancer. The aim of the study was to evaluate the necessity of axillary lymph node dissection in patients with breast cancer and sentinel lymph node micrometastasis or isolated tumor cells. METHODS Sentinel lymph node biopsy was performed in 136 patients for...

Histopathological features of occult metastasis detected by sentinel lymph node biopsy in oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES Sentinel lymph node biopsy has been introduced for head and neck cancer with promising results. Research in breast cancer has revealed different histopathological features of occult lymph node metastasis with possibly different clinical and prognostic implications. The aim of the study was to evaluate the histopathological features of occult metastasis detected by sentinel lymph node...

Is a lymph node detected by the dye-guided method a true sentinel node in gastric cancer?

PURPOSE A sentinel node is defined as the initial lymph node, to which cancer cells metastasize from a primary tumor. Recently, sentinel node navigation surgery has been done using the dye-guided method. However, no study has shown that a lymph node detected by the dye-guided method is the true sentinel node from the viewpoint of micrometastasis. Micrometastases of lymph nodes, in which no meta...

Ex vivo localization and immunohistochemical detection of sentinel lymph node micrometastasis in patients with colorectal cancer can upgrade tumor staging

BACKGROUND It is not clear if sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping can improve outcomes in patients with colorectal cancers. The purpose of this study was to determine the prognostic values of ex vivo sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping and immunohistochemical (IHC) detection of SLN micrometastasis in colorectal cancers. METHODS Colorectal cancer specimens were obtained during radical resections a...

Predictors of nonsentinel node metastasis in patients with breast cancer after sentinel node metastasis.

HYPOTHESIS The presence of nonsentinel lymph node (NSLN) metastasis after having a positive sentinel lymph node dissection finding is associated with tumor size and stage, the presence of lymphovascular invasion, micrometastasis, and extranodal extension. DESIGN Retrospective case series. SETTING University hospital. PATIENTS Four hundred seven consecutive patients at a single institution...
